History is the study of life in society in the past, in all its aspect, in relation to present developments and future hopes. It is the story of man in time, an inquiry into the past based on evidence. Indeed, evidence is the raw material of history teaching and learning.

The history is divided into three parts. They are:

1. Ancient India

2. Medieval India

3. Modern India

Additionally the syllabus also deals with the World History

There are total 250 marks assigned to this paper which covers History, Geography, Indian Society, Art and culture. Three hours are allotted to the candidates

When you analyze the syllabus minutely, you would find that History section is covered under GS Paper -1 section. Though there is not any dedicated and separate paper for history in mains, still it covers significant portion in paper . Many questions are asked from modern history, post independence as well as Indian National; movement.

Modern history section might take less time in mains preparation if you had given sufficient time during initial study of Prelims. Questions asked demands good understanding of the historical event. Regular answer writing practices with clarity of concept will benefit you.

In post - Indian history, you need to study some topics in details such as India-Pakistan wars, Shimla agreement, Green revolution, Punjab Crisis (Operation Blue Star), Economic reforms etc. Questions would be specific to any event.

Candidates can score good marks in World history being restricted to some of the major events such as Industrial Revolution, French Revolution, American Revolution, Chinese revolution, Russian Revolution, World wars, Great economic depression, Spread of capitalism, waves of decolonization etc. There is no need to study thick book.
